That Was Awkward: 25 Movies You Hoped Your Friends Would Enjoy

Have you ever tried to share a movie with someone only for them not to enjoy it and end up in an uncomfortable and awkward situation? It can be tough to pick a film that everybody will love, but the experience doesn’t have to ruin your night. Below are the top 25 movies that Redditors really hoped their friends would love, that just fell flat.

1. Cannibal Holocaust

The OP posted, “Once I was dating this girl who told me she was into gory horror movies, and so naturally, I decided we should watch Cannibal Holocaust. She was down for it, and we had our movie date, and she wasn’t invested at all, and it became increasingly uncomfortable as the film went on (later, I found out she thought it was too slow and boring, with nothing to do with the actual content of the movie). Eventually, she asked if I just wanted to bang instead, so we turned it off and finished our date in the bedroom. What sort of movies have you had this kind of situation with?”

2. Human Centipede

One user added to the thread and stated, “Could be worse. A coworker told me about a first date that involved the date proudly showing her the Human Centipede.”

One user asked, “Did it go exactly like this?”

The user answered, “Lmao. No, she didn’t go for a second date.”

One user added, “Oddly enough, a friend of mine did this with their same freaking movie … and he wonders why no woman wants to date him.”

3. Pink Flamingos

Pink Flamingos sure isn’t for everyone,” one Redditor shared.

Another user replied, “And that’s what’s wrong with society.”

One user commented, “Pink Flamingos isn’t for anyone.”

4. Blade Runner 2049

One user commented, “My wife and I saw Blade Runner 2049 with a friend. He was the one who had seen it and was nervous about our reaction. He felt the slow pacing would put us out for the length that it was. We told him we liked the first one and fully expected to enjoy it. We ended up loving the movie, and he had nothing to worry about. But even then, he was never fully convinced and always felt unsure whether we really liked it or not. So it’s a no-win situation, is what I’m saying.”

5. Sci-Fi Movies

“I basically stopped watching sci-fi or fantasy movies with my wife. I tried to show her quite a few of them while we were dating and newly married, but she always just got bored and/or fell asleep. It’s just something we don’t have in common,” one user posted.

Another user added, “Never showing Blade Runner 2049 to my wife ever again; she fell asleep like three times during the first 20 minutes.”

One user also replied, “I love both Blade Runners, but the original specifically had the most sleep-inducing vibe of all time. Not boring at all, just this ambiance of sleepiness.”

6. Hereditary

One user shared, “I told my hairdresser to watch Hereditary. I haven’t heard from her since.”

Another user commented, “D-mn, how long have you been on the hairdresser’s chair with your fringe half-cut waiting for her to come back? Should we send help?”

7. Labyrinth

One Redditor posted, “Labyrinth. I showed it to a room full of people in college, and it went over like a lead balloon.”

Another user replied, “This one hurts. Gotta admit.”

One user also shared, “This is a movie that I saw once as a child and absolutely adored and have fond, magical memories of it … and so I’m wary of ever watching it again lest it fails to live up to my memories of what it was like lol.”

8. The Wolf of Wall Street

“I forgot what I was getting into when I showed my Mom [The] Wolf of Wall Street. It was awkward, one user shared.

One user replied, “I think I have you beat—I suggested as an 18-year-old watching Eyes Wide Shut with my Mum. I’m not sure if we spoke to each other the week afterwards.”

9. Office Space

One Redditor shared, “My sister and her girlfriend hated Office Space. Didn’t laugh once. They also hated The Matrix. We haven’t watched movies together since.”

Another user commented, “Sounds like someone had a case of the Mondays.”

10. Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

One user shared, “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. Not for everyone, I guess.”

Another user added, “Good heavens! I LOVED that movie and questioned myself, ‘Am I a creep for liking this story? This is how I react to smells.’ My family would hate me if I showed them this.”

11. The Princess Bride

“I went on a first date to see The Princess Bride when it was released in theatres (I’m old). I thought it was one of the best movies I’d ever seen. At the end of the movie, I asked what she thought, and she said, ‘I thought it was kind of stupid.’ I said to myself, ‘I hope I get in her pants tonight because I’m never asking her out again.’ I did not get in her pants. I did not go out with her again,” one user posted.

12. Fantastic Mr. Fox

One Redditor shared, “I tried to show Fantastic Mr. Fox [to] my gf. She hated it.”

Another user commented, “My wife hates all Wes Anderson, but tolerated [Mr. Fox] slightly more (probably because I didn’t tell her it was Wes).”

One added, “Never tell em it’s Wes. Edit: we came close to watching Grand Budapest, and I f— up and said it was Wes. We watched something else.”

13. In Bruges

One Redditor posted, “In Bruges. I kept looking over at her to see if she was laughing, but I think she was turned off when the racist dwarf showed up, and it went downhill from there.”

Another user commented, “I was put off from seeing this film by the trailer that made it seem like it had Scary Movie-type humor with its wacky dwarf karate and stuff. The actual movie was pretty great, and its dwarf character was absolutely not just cheap humor. he was a funny, sad, complicated, f— up person just like the rest.”

14. Best in Show

“Not really my story, but my wife went on a date before we met and went to Best In Show. She laughed her a– off the whole time (as a good and normal person would), and her date didn’t laugh. At all. It was one date. We watch that every time we get and laugh every time like it’s brand new to us,” a user shared.

15. Napoleon Dynamite

One user shared, “Napoleon Dynamite. I hyped it up so much, and she hated it.”

Another user replied, “The classic Napoleon Dynamite problem.”

16. Airplane

One Redditor posted, “Airplane. I was so excited to show my girlfriend. I don’t think she laughed once. It was the beginning of the end for us.”

Another user added, “Showed it to my now-wife on two separate occasions, and she fell asleep both times. Comedies, especially older spoof comedies, are really hit or miss with a lot of people.”

17. Wet Hot American Summer

Wet Hot American Summer. My friend got so bored she said she was going to the bathroom and just walked away for 20 minutes,” a user shared.

Another user replied, “… How does someone find this movie boring!? Yes, it has hilarious dialogue, but there is also so much physical comedy as well. I just feel like it’s funny in so many ways that its humour should connect on some level with most people. I am so sorry you had to go through that.”

18. Monty Python

One user shared, “Showed my friend [Monty Python and the Holy Grail] once. 15 minutes in, and he hadn’t laughed yet … I just turned it off and was like if you don’t get it yet, you’re not gonna get it.”

Another user asked, “I am one of these people like your friend who doesn’t get Month Python. I knew some people in high school 20 years ago who were obsessed, and I just never got it. Is there a secret? What’s the secret?”

One Redditor answered, “There is no secret. Comedy is subjective and not the same for everyone.”

19. Mad Max Fury Road

Mad Max Fury Road. And my grandma. I knew she liked action movies (more specifically, war movies and westerns), so I thought I would take the opportunity to show her what I thought was one of the greatest action movies ever made (certainly in scale and spectacle). She didn’t say a word during the movie; she just sat and watched. As credits rolled, my 93-year-old grandmother looked at me in disapproval and said in her Boston accent, ‘I didn’t like that at all!’ I guess cars weren’t her thing,” a user posted.

One user commented, “Liking war movies and westerns is very different from liking action movies, man….”

20. V for Vendetta

One user shared, “A coworker of mine asked me to borrow V for Vendetta after hearing me describe my love for the film. He gave it back, saying her couldn’t finish it as it was one of the most boring movies he had ever seen. I’m 39, and he’s 26. I know the movie isn’t perfect or even for everybody but the way he tore it to s— just made it clear we are worlds apart.”

21. Zoolander

“Not so much a watching experience, but I remember this absolute f— wit manager at work talking about how his kids had watched a movie that was the worst movie he’d ever seen. He hadn’t laughed once, and it was incomprehensible to him. The movie? Zoolander,” one user posted.

Another user commented, “So hot right now…”

22. Triangle

One Redditor posted, “Triangle. I showed a friend, and at the end, she was like, ‘What type of movie did you just make me watch?’ I guess it’s not for everyone.”

One user replied, “I don’t usually see that movie referenced. Thank you for reminding me I need to show my husband.”

23. Whiplash

One user shared, “Watched Whiplash with my dad a few years ago. I should’ve walked out at the start when he was making dumb jokes about Fletcher being so close up in Neiman’s face and ‘kissing him’ but I figured he would stop so I toughed it out. He didn’t stop. Kept saying it’s ‘unrealistic’ and a teacher would never abuse their students like that.

“Like bro. Obviously, it’s exaggerated, it’s fiction, but also, if you watched the f— movie, you’d know the guy loses his job bc of it. This type of s– went on the whole time. Still upset me like 3 years later lmao. Making assumptions like ‘This would never happen bc ___’ is so annoying when you haven’t even given the film a chance to show you what consequences he faces. I have since given up on watching movies with my dad at all.”

24. The Godfather

One user posted, “I recommended we watch The Godfather when a friend gets together. I have not recommended a movie to that group since then.”

Another user replied, “I love that operatic, lay around for hours lost in the story stuff. But it’s definitely the type of movie I’ll only watch alone or with someone I know for a fact who will like it and be down to sit through it. I couldn’t imagine trying to get my friends to watch something like LOTR together, much less Godfather.”

25. Purple Rain

Purple Rain with my ex-boyfriend. Emphasis on the ex,” one user commented.

Another one added, “Dump him in the waters of Lake Minnetonka.”
