7 Essential Steps to Start a Photography Blog in 2023 | Expert Tips

Starting a photography blog can be a great way to achieve these goals and more! Let’s talk about some essential steps to start a photography blog to set yourself up for success.


Step 1: Define Your Niche

One of the first things you need to do when starting a photography blog is to define your niche. This will help you stand out from the competition, attract the right audience, and establish yourself as an expert in your field. Ask yourself what type of photography you’re most passionate about and what sets you apart from other photographers. One of the mistakes I’ve seen in this industry is people thinking a photographer can photograph anything. This simply is not true. When you have a specific ailment, you request a doctor that is specialized in treating that ailment. Photography should be the same.

Taking the time to choose a focus on a specific genre, such as food, landscape, or portrait photography, or a particular style, such as black and white or street photography, will allow you to grow faster than trying to master all photography. As a food photographer, I would never agree to shoot headshots, newborn photos, or a wedding. I’m used to shooting food. I understand food. I specialize in food. People and babies move. I don’t have the same level of knowledge when it comes to portrait photography, and a portrait photographer wouldn’t know the nuances of food that I know. Whatever niche you choose, make sure it’s something you’re passionate about and can consistently create content around.

Step 2: Choose a Blogging Platform

The next step is to choose a blogging platform that will allow you to create and publish your content. There are many platforms to choose from, but I highly recommend a WordPress dot com site for blogging. When selecting a platform, consider your budget, technical skills, and design preferences. For most people, a WordPress site will absolutely cover all the basics and offer some razzle dazzle if you need it!

After becoming a full-time food photographer in addition to being a blogger, I know that having a successful photography blog requires more than just showcasing your photography skills. The content you produce should be aligned with your niche, whether it’s portrait photography, landscape photography, food photography or wildlife photography, among others.

Planning is key when it comes to creating a successful blog. By creating a content calendar, you can plan your blog posts in advance and ensure that you stick to a consistent publishing schedule. This will help you stay organized and avoid the last-minute rush to create content. It will also help you maintain a steady flow of content for your readers to enjoy.

There are various types of content that you can create for your photography blog. For instance, sharing your own photography work is an excellent way to showcase your skills, share your passion, and inspire others. Showing off your own skill set, like intentionally taking photos of melted ice cream, so it draws in the reader, is counter to what most photographers would do. A lot of photographers use fake ice cream (mashed potatoes or cornstarch and hair conditioner) for photos, to extend the time you can work with them. But as a chef and photographer, I know that my audience wants to eat food they can lick off the screen. So I shoot for my audience.

As a photography blogger, you would explain why using fake ice cream works on a commercial shoot and why real ice cream works best on a food blog. See the difference? You can also provide helpful tips and tutorials for beginner and advanced photographers alike. Sharing reviews of photography equipment and products is also a great way to share your experiences with your audience and help them make informed decisions.

Another content idea is to feature other photographers and their work. This can help build a sense of community around your blog and inspire your audience to learn from other photographers. It can also help you create valuable connections with other professionals in the industry. Finally, don’t forget to optimize your content for search engines. This means using relevant keywords and meta tags to help your blog rank higher in search engine results. By doing this, you can increase your visibility, attract more readers, and ultimately grow your audience.

Make sure to optimize your meta tags, use relevant keywords in your content, and build backlinks to your blog from other high-quality websites. This can help you rank higher in search engine results and attract more readers.
